The Golden City" of Izamál was originally founded by the Mayans in the fifth century A.D. The majority of Izamál’s streets are lined with houses built only a few years after the Spanish conquest. While there is much of both the Mexican and Mayan cultures in evidence here. Houses, shops and churches throughout Izamal are all painted the same shade of golden-yellow and the town has been nicknamed La Ciudad Armarillo (The Yellow City).
