Cuneiform writing on a brick from Erech (Erek, or Uruk), today's Wanka, about 20 km east of the Euphrates near the ancient city of Ur in southern Iraq. It is one of the oldest and largest cities in Babylonia and was inhabited from the 5th millennium BC to the 4th century AD. The city is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mesopotamia and gives its name to the Uruk period (about 3500 to 2800 BC). It is also one of the oldest urban centers in the world.
