Annie Couppis was a 74 year old Greek Cypriot who after refusing to move following the 1974 intervention was allowed to remain in her house. The Green Line buffer zone or referred to as the Attila Line named after Turkey's 1974 military intervention extends across the island, in some parts of old Nicosia only a few metres wide and other parts km wide. Since April 2003, a number of crossing points have opened up between the north and the south. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Nicosia remains the last divided capital in Europe.
