Community Classes For Poor Filipinos Locked Out Of Digital Education

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - JULY 16: A boy holds up a portrait of him wearing a facemask drawn by a classmate, during community classes for out-of-school youth and poor children who cannot afford digital learning at a slum community on July 16, 2021 in Quezon city, Metro Manila, Philippines. Volunteer teachers at a slum community are holding physical classes for children who are unable to afford the gadgets needed for distance learning, even as pandemic lockdown measures prohibit face-to-face classes. The teachers, who come from the volunteer group Save San Roque, said that they initially planned to help only those locked out of distance learning, but as classes began, several out-of-school youth have started sitting-in as well, attending classes on subjects like science, math, and culture. A week ago the World Bank issued an apology to the Philippine government over its recent report on the country's education system which said that over 80% of Filipino children "do not know what they should know" a report which the country's education minister called "outdated and insulting".
