Dora Ratjens

A British woman high-jumper has been given back a world mark she set in 1939 because a girl who set a better mark some months before has turned out to be a man. British housewife Mrs. Dorothy Tyler, 37, received word, July 23rd that the five-foot, five and three-eighths inches leap she made in May, 1939, has been put back on the books as a world record. Originally, her jump had been stricken from the world list because of a claim that Germany's Dora Ratjen had leaped a little higher at Amsterdam the previous September. Now it has been established that Ratjen, shown above in action in Vienna in September 1938, was actually a man known as Herman Ratjen. Ratjen was last reported working as a waiter in Hamburg. The women's world record for the high jump is currently held by American's Mildred McDaniel at five feet, nine and one-quarter inches.
