(Original Caption) Carrara, the home of the famous Carrara marble is a hive of industry because of the great demand from America for the superfine quality of the marble found nowhere else in the world. Fully 10,000 men are now employed in the quarries, producing the marble to fill the American orders. Carrara is situated in a valley of the Apeninines. Since the time of the Romans the marble quarries of Carrara have furnished the finest material for statuary. Immense quantities of the stone are shipped to all parts of the world mainly from the Port of Avenzia, three miles distant. The cutting and polishing of marble are carried on very extensively and there are numerous ateliers of sculptors in the town, which possesses an academy of sculptor and museum.
