Cashless Restaurants in Washington, DC
WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 5:
Customer Muhammad Scercy, R, of DC, chats with a restaurant worker behind a sign announcing the restaurant does not accept cash at Simply Green, one of a growing number of DC restaurants that have gone cashless, on Thursday, July 5, 2018, in Washington, DC. Scercy said the restaurant's cashless policy doesn't affect him because he always uses his debit card, for security and to track his spending. As more and more fast-casual restaurants in D.C. and beyond are refusing to accept cash for security and efficiency reasons, some advocates for the poor and lawmakers on the D.C. Council are pushing back. They say cashless policies in places such as Sweet Green, B. Doughnut and Surfside discriminate against homeless people and others who don't have bank accounts. A bill before the D.C. Council would require businesses to accept cash.
