Sudanese Refugees Thriving In Ethiopian Refugee Camp

BONGA, ETHIOPIA - MARCH 12: Dozens of pregnant Sudanese refugees belonging to the Uduk tribe wait to receive prenatal care at a clinic March 12, 2003 at the Bonga Refugee camp on the border of Sudan, in Bonga, Ethiopia. The Uduk tribe was threatened by extinction, with about 7000 refugees arriving at the Bonga refugee camp in 1989, fleeing the civil war in their native Sudan. The group has thrived in the camp with the population skyrocketing to more than 17,000, with an average of 100 births a month. The success is attributed to the tribe's polygamous practices, young marriages and an aversion to any kind of birth control. More than thirty percent of the camps inhabitants are less than five-years-old. (Photo by Natalie Behring-Chisholm/Getty Images)
