California In Third Consecutive Year Of Drought
BAKER, CA - AUGUST 28: In an aerial view, dead Joshua trees are seen in the eastern Mojave Desert on August 28, 2022 east of Baker, California. Scientists say that climate change will likely kill virtually all of California's iconic Joshua trees by the end of the century. The threatened plants are dying from the hotter and dryer conditions, and are increasingly threatened by invasive non-native grasses which are fertilized by pollutants carried in the winds from cities. The invasive grasses burn with greater intensity than the normal native grasses, burning deeply into the trees and killing them. California officials have been debating whether to give the trees permanent protection by listing them under the state's Endangered Species Act. In June, the California Fish and Game Commission deadlocked on the matter and deferred making a decision until at least October. Scientist predict that in Joshua Tree National Park, farther south, only 0.02% of the park will still have viable habitat for them ito survive in. (Photo by David McNew/Getty Images)
