Haida Nation Revives Native Traditions in British Columbia, Canada
(L-R) Irene Mills, Vince Collison, Amanda Jusquan Bedard and Guujaaw sing a supper song during a potluck dinner held to celebrate a recent court case win in the Haida village of Old Masset, on Queen Charlotte Islands, in British Columbia, Canada. The Haida population numbers about 6,000 today, where in 1774 when Europeans first arrived on the islands, the population was estimated to be between 10,000 to 30,000 people. The Haida Nation recently won a landmark case in Canada's Supreme Court whereby British Columbia must consult with them over land use anywhere on their traditional homelands on the Queen Charlotte Islands.
