Filipino Communist Rebels Exchange Wedding Vows Amidst A Peace Process

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE, PHILIPPINES - APRIL 02: Ka Guillen (comrade Guillen) and Ka Nancy (comrade Nancy) raise their firearms in salute with guerillas of the New People's Army (NPA) after the conclusion of their wedding on April 2, 2017 in Mountain Province, Philippines. The New People's Army, a military organization of the communist movement in the Philippines, has been waging a half-century war against the U.S. treaty alliance with the Philippines as the rebel group celebrate its 48th year anniversary since it was founded. According to recent reports, the Philippine government and communist rebels made agreements on a joint interim ceasefire agreement in the Netherlands despite delays as President Rodrigo Duterte insisted the government peace panel lay out conditions, including non-recognition of any territorial claims of the rebel group, a halt to extortion or collection of revolutionary taxes, and the release of all prisoners held by the rebels, before making the agreement. The anniversary comes at a time of unprecedented changes inside the Communist Party of the Philippines after a younger Central Committee had been elected to lead the Party program with hopes to forge a bilateral ceasefire.
