Thailand Celebrates Queen's Birthday With National Holiday

The holiday marks the birthday of the current queen mother of Thailand, Queen Sirikit. Her birthday was 12th August but as it fell on a weekend, a national holiday is observed on the following Monday. Queen Sirikit was born on the 12th August 1932 and met Rama IX in France in 1946 when he had already become ruler of Thailand. They were married on 28th April 1950. Across Thailand and in particular Bangkok, building are decorated to honour the Queen, where portraits and decorative flowers are placed outside office buildings throughout the capital.
