(Original Caption) 9/11/1967-New York, NY- Australia's John Newcombe, winner of the U.S. Tennis Championship at Forest Hills and also holder of the Wimbledon crown, obviously is pleased as he holds the trophy presented to him as Tennis Player of the Year. The trophy, a silver tennis racquet, is awarded annually to the player who establishes the best record in five major national championships of the world. They are the British, U.S., French, Australian, and Italian. This is the first year the award was made.
