Carter is pictured leaning out of a train window at King's Cross station, London, just about to set off for home. Horatio (Raich) Carter (1913-1994) was a legend at Sunderland FC. A local lad, he captained the team to their first FA Cup victory, scoring the winning goal - Sunderland beat Preston North End 3-1. Carter married a few days before the final. When the Queen presented him with the Cup she is reported to have said, That will make a fine wedding present. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs.
