Ely Cathedral - Whiteread art
The Venerable David Fleming looks at a bronze sculpture by Rachel Whiteread which has been installed in the north transept of the Ely cathedral, where it will be for the next four weeks. * This installation is part of a six-week event organised by the Art Fund, Extraordinary Art, which aims to bring works of art to a new audience, through placing them in unusual settings around the country. The work, loaned by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, represents a pair of mortuary slabs; one with a lightly hollowed surfaced designed to capture bodily fluids and channel them away, the second a cast of that same concave surface turned upside down so that it forms a convex shape, bordered by a narrow lip.
