DAF variomatic transmission, 1966.
NETHERLANDS - MAY 09: This is said to be the simplest automatic car transmission so far manufactured. The transmission system comprises a two-stage centrifugal clutch with expanding shoes in a drum bolted to the flywheel. A short propeller shaft connects this with a simple bevel box, and a pinion on the end of this shaft engages two crownwheels, one for forward and one for reverse motion. The driver only has to move the gear lever forward or backward to engage drive - the accelerator does the rest. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
