ME/wyeoak 06/07/2002 Jahi Chikwendiu/TWP The beloved Wye Oak, Maryland's more than 450-year-old state tree that stood in Queen Anne, Maryland, was felled yesterday by powerful thunderstorms that also downed power lines throughout the Washington area. The Wye Oak, the nation's largest white oak tree, stood 96 feet tall and had a circumference of 31 feet, 10 inches. Authorities believe that high winds finally toppled the old tree, which suffered from a fomes fungus, shoe string rot, and old age.
