Combe Gibbet View - stock photo
Combe Gibbet on the Downs adjacent to Walbury Hill in West Berkshire. The Gibbet was erected in 1676 to display the gibbeted (hung) bodies of George Broomham and Dorothy Newman who were engaged in an adulterous affair and had murdered Brooham's wife and son. The Gibbet, erected to deter others from similar acts, was only ever used for this couple.
