An August food-and-drink still life with fresh cucumbers, garlic, dill and matte bottle of wine. The composition illustrates the preparation of the pickling process of cucumbers. Dill (Anethum graveolens) is an annual herb in the celery family Apiaceae. It is the sole species of the genus Anethum. The dill flowers are arranged in ceramic jug with green leaves of cherry tree and blackcurrant. Fresh cucumbers are put in ceramic bowl, and pickled cucumbers are in screw-cap glass jar. This arrangement was captured in soft natural light falling from top right, realizing an effect of contrasted light and shadow (chiaroscuro).
