Jeremy Hunt speech and interview; Jeremy Hunt interview SOT - this is about what doctors and nurses on front line want - they want culture in NHS, which isn't about ticking boxes, compliance, it's about being freed to spend time caring and looking after patients, doing things they went into health service to do - culture of compliance in NHS, not culture of striving for excellence, doing what hospitals should be about / that's what I want to challenge - targets help to bring down waiting times but don't want targets at any cost - don't want to ignore the dignity, respect, care and compassion - we had culture all about whether you ticked the box - it became culture where you could hit target and miss the point, that's what we have to change - too easy for ministers to blame civil servants - ministers have to take responsibility for culture in NHS - most important thing I can do for doctors and nurses is give them comfort that where there are problems I am going to speak up, do something about them, not sweep them under the carpet - they want an NHS famous across the world not just for the values it represents but for excellence of the care, compassion, dignity and respect it shows to some of the most vulnerable people in society - David Nicholson did what political masters wanted / he's also the person who brought down MRSA rates, waiting times / he's done huge amount to make NHS better / mistake to say this is one man's fault - look at culture in NHS and ask what do we need to do to show dignity, respect, care and compassion that doctors and nurses on front line want to show but are working in a system that makes that difficult - he is right man for job
