‘Count Me In’ – Construction Unions Protest, NYC

NEW YORK CITY UNION SQUARE, NY – MAY 08: Members of the Laborers' NYC Locals joined with other NYC Building Construction Trades to hold the #CountMeIn solidarity rally in Union Square Manhattan. The crowd is motivated by the presence of Gary LaBarbera, president of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, who repeatedly chanted "New York City is a union town, and you can count me in.” Men and women waved American flags and green “#CountMeIn” placards and enthusiastically chanted "CountMeIn". Gary LaBarbera also introduced guest speaker the Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo. Unions are against open shop policies on construction sites. Unions demand proper safety training, wages and benefits. Developers on some large projects in the City of New York have used the 'Open Shop' model which has both union and non-union construction workers on the same projects. By definition an 'Open Shop" is a place of employment at which one is not required to join or financially support a union (closed shop) as a condition of hiring or continued employment. Open shop is also known as a merit shop. The unions argue that this has led to lapses in safety at many sites, and instances of serious injury and even death. #CountMeInNYC #OpenShop #YCBldgTrades #NYGovCuomo #50Hudson #HudsonYardsRising #NEWStrongWomen #tradeswomen #1u #HelloHudsonYards #UNION #solidarity #UnionStrong #GreedKills #WeDeserveBetter #faircontract (Footage by Tomas Abad/Getty Images).
