GIFFORD: Are you one of those kinds of people that because you spend so much time on ice you actually adore summer more than anybody, or do you long for the ice? Mr. OHNO: I love the summer. I love the summer. GIFFORD: Yeah. Mr. OHNO: I love the winter. I love all seasons, but the summer's nice. It's been hot. KOTB: We've been watching you, obviously we watched you in Vancouver do you thing. What have you been doing since then because a lot of people haven't seen you since? Mr. OHNO: Wow, I've been--you know, I haven't slept in my own bed basically I think more than seven nights total since the games in Vancouver. KOTB: Wow. GIFFORD: So you're sleeping around. And it's basically what you're saying. Mr. OHNO: In hotels. I hotels. GIFFORD: You're sleeping around, let's be honest. Mr. OHNO: Yeah, getting in a lot of fights with a lot of pillows, yeah. No, you know, I've been writing a book, which is fantastic. You know, I just finished it, it's going to be out in October. End of October. GIFFORD: Oh-oh. You're going to have competition. That's when Hody's... KOTB: Me and your, Apolo. GIFFORD: ...Hody's comes. Oh. Mr. OHNO: Good. KOTB: We'll root for yours. GIFFORD: A little. KOTB: Good. Mr. OHNO: And then, you know, I launched my own company, a nutritional supplement company called Eight Zone... GIFFORD: Yeah. Mr. OHNO: ...kind of revolving around my own nutritional needs for the games and providing that for the--for the public. GIFFORD: How many calories do you need when you are actually competing? How many calories do you need to go through each day? Mr. OHNO: It depends on what kind of activity I'm doing. KOTB: Mm-hmm. Mr. OHNO: Right, so every single day is different. So you have to eat accordingly each day. KOTB: Do you still work out? I know you don't work out obviously, as intensely. Mr. OHNO: I have to work out. I have to stay fit. I mean, that's kind of who I am as a person. You know, I believe health and fitness. My brain functions better, everything works better, you know. GIFFORD: Well, you'd miss it, too, you know, when you're... Mr. OHNO: Yeah. I would miss it tremendously, yeah. KOTB: Sure. Now, your book, is this--it's kind of a life story, is that what's... Mr. OHNO: It's a life story. A lot of life lessons I've learned. We go very deep in my book. So a lot of my own insecurities that I've had as an athlete that you kind of shield for a long time... KOTB: Sure. Mr. OHNO: ...you bring them out. GIFFORD: Is that hard? Mr. OHNO: It was very hard. You know, I talk about a lot of things from the relationship with my father when I was younger to the mother that I never had... KOTB: Mm-hmm. Mr. OHNO: ...to a lot of things in my life that kind of shaped me in the character of who I am today. KOTB: And you do a lot of motivational speaking. Mr. OHNO: I do. I do. KOTB: Does that stuff play in those speeches as well? Mr. OHNO: Absolutely. You know, as we were talking off camera about Twitter... KOTB: Mm-hmm. Mr. OHNO: ...you know, I--that... KOTB: Yeah, I follow Apolo. You should follow Apolo. GIFFORD: He's a Twitter freak. KOTB: No, he's--you're great to follow. Mr. OHNO: Yeah. Thank you. KOTB: You always have some cool anecdotes and things. Mr. OHNO: You know, inspiration... GIFFORD: Did you twitter this morning you were coming on with us? Mr. OHNO: Are you kidding me? Absolutely. KOTB: Yeah. Mr. OHNO: I've been twitting it since a couple of days ago. KOTB: OK, good. GIFFORD: Yeah. Mr. OHNO: Yeah, got to have as many people watch as possible. A lot of my fans. KOTB: Yeah. Mr. OHNO: But, you know, it's for me it's like self-therapy. You know, you can talk about what you're doing during the day, you kind of inspire people. And at the end of the day no matter how many Olympic medals I have, you know, I'm trying to help somebody else. And that's what's most important, yeah. KOTB: What else do you have going? Mr. OHNO: So actually I'm here today to announce this awesome partnership, right? KOTB: Mm-hmm. Mr. OHNO: It's this brand-new partnership, this six-year deal basically between the USOC, The United States Olympic Committee, and the BMW Group. And it outlines not only just the financial needs and the help that they're going to have as a sponsor, an official sponsor for the new mobile partner... KOTB: Mm-hmm. Mr. OHNO: ...but actually they're going to go far beyond just the financial needs that we--you know, we have. So not only are we going to have access to the BMW technology in terms of aerodynamics, the speed, everything revolving around their company, you know, it's going to be able to help the athletes in a performance-based category. So... KOTB: How? What will it do? Mr. OHNO: So in moving forward for short-track speedskating, everything's revolved around aerodynamics, around speed, around cornering. KOTB: Yeah. Mr. OHNO: Obviously, BMW focuses on a lot of those same things. GIFFORD: Yeah, in their cars. Mr. OHNO: And we never had access to a lot of those technologies before. GIFFORD: Oh, the technologies. Cool. Mr. OHNO: So we're going to have access to these as athletes. KOTB: Mm-hmm. Mr. OHNO: And so hopefully we'll be able to see this for the next two years in London, the next four years in Sochi and beyond. KOTB: Cool. Are you going to keep competing? Mr. OHNO: That's a good question. You know, right now I'm taking a long break. GIFFORD: He's been doing Olympics for 15 years. It's unbelievable. KOTB: I know, but no one wants you to quit. Mr. OHNO: Yeah, 15 years. KOTB: So we--yeah, so you won't--so you're not sure about that. Mr. OHNO: I'm not sure about it right now. You know, I mean... KOTB: OK. GIFFORD: Maybe acting, we hear. KOTB: Yes. Mr. OHNO: Maybe acting. You know, first and foremost I'm very proud of being an Olympic athlete. KOTB: Yeah. Mr. OHNO: I mean, it's an honor to compete for you country. KOTB: Mm-hmm. Mr. OHNO: I've had an amazing career and I'm very happy about where I'm at. GIFFORD: And you're a darned good dancer, too. Mr. OHNO: Thank you. KOTB: And you're cute. GIFFORD: Thanks, Apolo. KOTB: Apolo, thank you. Mr. OHNO: Thank you. GIFFORD: Thanks for being with us on our 600th episode. KOTB: Yes. Mr. OHNO: Yes, thanks for having me. KOTB: Uh-huh. 10:21:13 (3:14) Discipline Dilemma: When Someone Else's Child Misbehaves: Psychotherapist Stacy Kaiser Discusses How To Discipline Someone Else's Child GFX: Graphic of the book "How To Be A Grown Up" by Stacy Kaiser. Psychotherapist Stacy Kaiser joins Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb live in Studio 1A. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: We love it when you come, Stacy... HODA KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: ...because you just don't--you just cut to it. KOTB: No BS. Yes. GIFFORD: I wasn't going to say that, but that... KOTB: No BS. GIFFORD: You cut right to it, darling. What is the problem with kids these days? Ms. STACY KAISER: The problem with kids today is that parents are not parenting. KOTB: Mm-hmm. Ms. KAISER: You know, we had those easy-going--we have an easy-going philosophy... KOTB: Yeah. Ms. KAISER: ...because our parents were too strict and we need to find the center. KOTB: But if you're on a play date, pretend, and you have your child and someone else's child, are you free to discipline that other kid if that other kid starts getting rambunctious or into trouble? GIFFORD: You're talking about the parents still being--all parents around? KOTB: Right, no. If you're on a play date, just you--it's one parent and your child and somebody else's kid. GIFFORD: OK. Ms. KAISER: Well, I always say if you're the only parent... KOTB: Yeah. Ms. KAISER: ...you're the parent in charge. KOTB: OK. Ms. KAISER: So absolutely. Especially if there's a safety issue. As a matter of fact, anywhere you go if there's a safety issue and that kid's at risk or another kid's at risk... KOTB: Jump in. Ms. KAISER: ...you jump in immediately. But if it's you and another child, then you tell them on the front end, `these are my rules at this place'... KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: Yeah. Ms. KAISER: ...`or in my home.' GIFFORD: Yeah. Ms. KAISER: `And we follow the rules.' If you tell them on the front end... KOTB: Yeah. Ms. KAISER: ...then you know that you can back it up on the back end. GIFFORD: Well, then let's go forward with that analogy. Ans now we're at the--at the playground and you're with your child and another child is there and everybody--you're talking to the parent and all of a sudden their kid throws sand in your kid's face, and the parents does nothing about it. Then what do you do? KOTB: Yeah. Ms. KAISER: That's a delicate situation because as you know as a parent, our children are like our property, it's our finest thing. In an earthquake or a fire... KOTB: Mm-hmm. Ms. KAISER: ...we're going to grab them first. So you don't want to take over someone else's child. So you want to make a general statement to the group. `We don't throw sand at the park. Nobody is allowed to throw sand.' KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: What if then the woman says, `That's my child and you have no right to say that about my child'? Ms. KAISER: Well, then you graciously apologize and then you can pull your child away from the situation and say to them, `Listen, you're not going to be playing with little Johnny over there because Johnny throws sand.' KOTB: OK. What if you are on a plane, and this has happened to most people... GIFFORD: All the time. KOTB: ...someone--a kid behind you is kicking the back of your seat, the parent next to that child is doing absolutely nothing. GIFFORD: Sees it. Sees it. KOTB: Reading. Oblivious, knows it's happening. GIFFORD: Knows it's happening and does nothing. KOTB: Yeah. What do you do? Ms. KAISER: You know, I have to tell you that actually happened to me on the plane coming here. KOTB: Yeah. Ms. KAISER: And, of course, me, like everybody else, I want to reach back and grab the kid's foot. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: But you can get...(unintelligible)...for that. Ms. KAISER: So rule number one is you never touch another child. KOTB: OK. Ms. KAISER: Ever, unless there's a safety issue. KOTB: Right. Ms. KAISER: So I did not do that. But what I always tell parents--people to do is that you support and suggest. So to support and suggest means you would turn back and support the parent and say, `I know it's really hard to sit still on a plane'--but make a suggestion--`but your son is kicking my seat.' That's exactly what I did. KOTB: So you should talk to the parent, not the kid. Ms. KAISER: Absolutely. You always talk to the parent. GIFFORD: Can you go to the stewards or the flight attendants and ask them to... Ms. KAISER: Sure. If you're one of those people who's... GIFFORD: Mediate. Ms. KAISER: ...a little more passive and you don't feel comfortable... KOTB: Mm-hmm. Ms. KAISER: ...you can call the flight attendant over and say, `Could you please help me? This little boy is kicking my seat.' GIFFORD: So a lot of times it's tone, isn't it? KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: It's like you can say something but say it in a nice way and a gracious way as opposed to, `You're letting you kid!'--which is what you want to say. KOTB: Yeah, yeah. GIFFORD: Right? Ms. KAISER: You know, that's part of what I think is really challenging is, you know, other kids can be annoying, especially if you don't have children. GIFFORD: Your own children can be annoying. Not mine, of course. But everybody else's. Ms. KAISER: And so if you can't--if you can't control another child, it can be irritating. So you have to calm yourself down so that you can find a way to talk to the child or the parent that is effective and will help you. KOTB: Stacy, thank you. GIFFORD: Oh, thanks so much, Stacy. Ms. KAISER: Thank you. KOTB: Always great advice. We appreciate it. GIFFORD: We love our Stacy. 10:30:17 (6:03) Today's Buzz: The Latest In Entertainment News: Bonnie Fuller and Roseanne Colletti Discuss Mel Gibson, Lindsay Lohan, Sarah Palin, and the Movie "Salt" EJ 10:30:56 (:14) EXT DAY MS: Actor Mel Gibson and his then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva walk on the red carpet. NBC's "Gossip Gram" host Roseanne Colletti and Hollywoodlife.com Editor-in-Chief Bonnie Fuller join Kathie Lee and Hoda Kotb live in Studio 1A. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Hello, ladies! HODA KOTB: Well, well, well. Ms. BONNIE FULLER: Hi. Ms. ROSEANNE COLLETTI: Good morning. GIFFORD: While we were all enjoying a hot summer weekend, you guys were getting all the information on all the buzz. KOTB: Right. Ms. BONNIE FULLER: We were. And it was--it was a fairly quiet weekend until this morning, and now more Mel news. Two--another very disturbing tape that's been revealed of him talking about Oksana and having sex in front of her 12-year-old. Ms. COLLETTI: This is the seventh tape released by RadarOnline. KOTB: Are you kidding me? GIFFORD: But isn't there a back story here? Hasn't she--he produced some of her recordings this past year. Ms. COLLETTI: Yes. KOTB: Her music, yeah. GIFFORD: Her music. She want--and actually co-wrote some of the songs. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: And now she wants to... Ms. FULLER: Who knew? GIFFORD: ...release these and he's not putting his--what they call his John Hancock... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...on the whole thing. Ms. FULLER: Well, I mean, can you imagine why not? KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: Yeah. Ms. FULLER: And I mean, you just have to wonder, you know, what was going on that would have pushed her to make--to make all of these audiotapes public when she knew that he was holding the strings on this record that he produced. KOTB: Well... GIFFORD: So has it been proven, though, that she's the one that actually released them to... KOTB: No, it hasn't been proven yet. GIFFORD: Yeah. Ms. FULLER: The suspicion's on her sister right now. GIFFORD: Ah. KOTB: Oh, of releasing it. Ms. FULLER: Yes. GIFFORD: OK. KOTB: And where is he and where... Ms. COLLETTI: But she didn't release them to the police, we notice... KOTB: Right. Ms. COLLETTI: ...they go to a Web site, go to RadarOnline. KOTB: Sure. GIFFORD: Right. KOTB: Where is he? What's he doing? Does anyone know where Mel's been? Ms. FULLER: He's been extremely quiet. However, he did have a visit with the Department of Child and Family Services. KOTB: Oh, OK. Ms. FULLER: They met with him in court last week apparently for about two hours, and as a result of that the judge decided not to take custody away from him. KOTB: Oh, OK. Interesting. Ms. COLLETTI: No. And Mel has hired someone to supervise visits with his child, with Lucia. Ms. FULLER: Smart idea. Ms. COLLETTI: To protect him from further accusations. KOTB: Are we going to--and we're going to be hearing that tape, I would imagine, all day. Ms. FULLER: Oh, yes. KOTB: I know it just came in so we haven't been able to bleep everything out to bring it to you. Ms. COLLETTI: It's pretty raw, Hoda. KOTB: Yeah. OK. GIFFORD: Oh, good grief. KOTB: So Lindsay is now on her sixth day of prison, is--or jail--is that right? Ms. FULLER: She did not have a good weekend in jail. Ms. COLLETTI: Whine, whine, whine. GIFFORD: No. She had a meltdown. Ms. FULLER: Yes. KOTB: What happened? GIFFORD: And not the good kind. KOTB: Yeah. Ms. FULLER: No. You know, I do--I feel for her. Ms. COLLETTI: Not the bubbly you had this morning. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: No. Ms. FULLER: I feel for her. Apparently the jail is absolutely frigid, she was shivering and crying and wailing to such a degree all night that the other prisoners, her cell mates, started to taunt her. And... GIFFORD: Well, then she's not learning much yet. She's still thinking it's all about her, she's not learning the core things she needs to learn in prison... KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: ...which is it's not all about you. KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: You live on a planet with other people and you obey driving laws and alcohol laws. KOTB: Right. Ms. COLLETTI: Right. (Continued...)
