Soldier Crabs in Okinawa - stock video

A large shoal of soldier crabs crawling on the mud flats: Long Shot to Zoom In. Soldier crabs live in sub-Tanegashima, from Nansei Shoto (South-west Archipelago) to Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philipines. The carapace is about 1cm wide and the legs are thin, longer than the carapace width. They live in the soft mud flats on the seaside of the mangrove. Most of the crab species crawl sideward, while soldier crabs crawl forward. Crawling forward in shoals looks like army files, hence the English name of "soldier crab." Iriomote Island, where these crabs were shot, has a population of 2,400. It belongs to Nansei Shoto, the second closest to Taiwan, next to Yonaguni Island.
