Two-thirds of universities submit plans for maximum tuition fees: Ed Miliband speech; Gareth Thomas MP (Labour) speech SOT re: this is deadline for universities to outline their fees Cameron/Clegg said 6,000 pounds would be basic and 9,000 pounds would be exception - now seeing the consequence of that / majority of universities are set to charge close to 9,000 pounds - not just a problem for students, it costs govt - higher the fees, the higher the loans and costs for govt - govt is set to cut 10,000 places - 10,000 miss out on university education - the shortfall in govt's budget looks like being half a billion pounds in 2014-15 - looking at shortfall of 220 million - respected experts have even questioned whether the reforms will save anything - over 30,000 young people could potentially miss out - we are calling for Cameron to guarantee that student numbers will not fall further. - want guarantee of no further cuts - we've heard lots of talks about powers of office of fair access to force universities to lower fees or do more to widen access - Cameron also needs to come clean *** some picture break up here *** - this is promise betrayed. Our families and young people deserve better.
