Far Too Hot for Wombats to Bother Getting Up for Breakfast
Wombats can't sweat, so the chubby marsupials failed to display much energy around the breakfast table as temperatures soared on January 10. Three wombats at the Sleepy Burrows Sanctuary - Tora, Patsy and Smokey - were seen (and heard) lazily munching on leaves and sweet potatoes. "In the very hot weather they need to be kept in conditions under 24 degrees, otherwise they suffer heat stress which, if prolonged, can kill bare-nosed wombats," keeper Donna Stepan said. "So, at the sanctuary on the hot days, when the younger wombats wake up, their 'breakfast' is served inside until the temperature outside is below 24 degrees Celsius."
