In 1962 my son Christopher was 3 years old and had been admitted at Childrens Hospital for mononucleosis. My daughter was two floors above us, having her tonsils taken out, but it was Christopher who was chosen to be visited by first lady Jacqueline Kennedy to receive a Christmas gift, and the visit would be televised for the evening news. As soon as she stepped into the room Mrs. Kennedy was extremely gracious that voice, that smile and her love of children just radiated as she talked to my very shy son. She handed him an exquisite globe with a golden angel inside. Christopher accepted it and even remembered his manners with a thank you. Unfortunately, the good manners only lasted until she left the room. Suddenly, in his little-boy voice, he announced, I dont want this, and threw the globe over the crib. I was horrified as I watched it shatter. I was eight months pregnant then, with my seventh child, but I picked up what was left, and for the past 53 years the little angel has hung without her globe on our Christmas tree. Every year my family is reminded of that time in history before the assassinations, the riots, when the world didnt seem as weary. And we think again of what a remarkable lady Mrs. Kennedy was.
